Snare Enhancer

Turn a flat, lifeless snare into one that cuts through the mix. Snare Enhancer listens to your snare track and layers a triggered, tuneable “crack” and reverb on top — without replacing the original.

Installing

Snare Enhancer ships as a VST3 and a Standalone app for Windows, macOS and Linux.

  • Windows: copy Snare Enhancer.vst3 to C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3.
  • macOS: copy the VST3 (and/or AU) to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3.
  • Linux: unzip into ~/.vst3/.

Rescan plug-ins in your DAW, then insert Snare Enhancer on a snare track.

How it works

The plugin runs three parallel layers, mixed by the three big knobs at the top:

Layer What it is
Dry Volume Your original snare, untouched. Leave at 100 to keep the source.
Crack Volume The triggered enhancement — noise “crack”, optional sample, harmonizers, a short reverb and EQ. This is where the punch comes from.
Space Volume A separate, tuneable ambience/reverb sent from the snare — the room or plate around the hit.

Quick start

  1. Insert on a snare track and play a few bars.
  2. In CRACK → TRIGGER, click Learn and keep playing (include your fastest fill). It sets the Threshold and picks the detection mode for you.
  3. Watch the Trigger Scope: each detected hit shows a marker. Drag the dashed line to fine-tune the Threshold.
  4. Bring up Crack Volume until the snare has the punch you want.
  5. Add Space Volume to taste for ambience. Load a preset to get started fast.

Trigger & Learn

The trigger decides which hits fire the enhancement.

Threshold The level (dBFS) a hit must reach to trigger. Matches the Trigger Scope’s scale — drag the line or the knob.
Re-trig Minimum time between triggers (ms). Guards against double-triggers.
Hyst Hysteresis: how far the level must fall before the next hit can arm.
Learn Listens for a few seconds and sets the Threshold automatically — and chooses the Detect mode. Play representative material, including your fastest fill or roll.
Detect Detection mode (next to Learn): Auto (Learn decides), Peak (classic level detection — great for isolated backbeats), or Transient (also catches fast rolls, tom fills and double kicks that ring between hits).

Tip: if fast hits are missed, set Detect to Transient, or just run Learn over the fast passage and leave it on Auto.

Trigger Scope

A rolling view of your snare’s envelope with a marker on every detected hit and a draggable dashed threshold line. Turn it off (the On toggle) to save a little CPU once you’re dialled in.

Built-in source (the “crack”)

White>Pink Blends the noise colour from white (bright) to pink (fuller).
Built-in Lvl Level of the noise crack, with a post-level meter.
Tone / HP Voice the noise: Tone shapes brightness; HP removes low rumble.
Attack / Decay / Curve The shape of each noise burst.
Vel>Noise How much the noise level follows how hard the snare was hit.

Custom sample

Load your own snare/clap sample to layer or to drive the reverb: Load sample…, toggle On, or Clear.

Custom Level Sample level, with a post-level meter.
FX Blend 0 = the sample stays clean/dry; 100 = it runs through the Crack harmonizer/reverb/EQ (handy to drive reverb from a sample so bleed can’t muddy it).
Phase (Ø) Invert the sample’s polarity if it fights the source.
Dynamics How much the sample level follows hit strength (0 = fixed, 100 = fully velocity-sensitive).

Harmonizers, Reverb & EQ

Advanced view adds pitched layers (BI = the noise, Sn = a pitched dry-snare thump), a Reverb (Plate/Hall/Room with Decay, Pre-delay, HF/LF Damping, Modulation) and a full EQ (low-cut, bell, high shelf) — all applied to the Crack layer.

SPACE section

An independent reverb send for ambience.

Pre-filter HP / LP / Tilt shape what feeds the reverb. High-pass it to keep hi-hat/kick bleed out and the reverb focused.
Reverb Mode (Plate/Hall/Room), Decay, Pre-delay, HF/LF Damping, Modulation.
EQ Low-cut, bell and high shelf on the reverb return.

Presets

Use the preset strip in the header (< / name / >). Click the name to open the menu:

  • Factory presets and your saved user presets.
  • Save preset… — store the current settings.
  • Import preset… — load a preset file from anywhere; a copy is added to your presets folder, and later saves overwrite that copy.
  • Open presets folder — reveal them on disk.

The factory presets are real, mix-ready starting points — several drive the enhancement from a built-in sample:

Snare – Instant rocker Sample-driven, punchy backbeat — a fast all-rounder.
Pink Crack Noise-only crack with a fuller, pink-weighted tone.
Long Bigger tail — more Space/reverb for a roomier snare.
Chapter IV Sample-driven, darker character.
JJ Snare Sample-driven, tight and modern.
Wallace Style Big ambient snare; uses Transient detection so fast fills fire.
Kick – oompf Adds low-end thump — it isn’t only for snares.
Toms – sprinkle Light enhancement for toms; Transient detection catches the fill.

A * next to the preset name means you’ve changed something since it was loaded.

Metering

Input/Output faders sit at the bottom with LED meters. The Built-in and Custom sources each have a compact fader-meter showing their post-level contribution: green up to 0 dBFS, amber to +6, red only above +6 — so a few dB of boost won’t imply distortion.

Licensing

Snare Enhancer runs in demo mode until activated. In demo, a short mute is applied periodically and a red banner shows. Buy a licence and enter your key via ⋮ menu → Enter licence key… A licence covers up to 3 machines and keeps working offline (it re-checks periodically when you’re online). The free Linux build and the 14-day trial activate the same way with the key you’re emailed.

Updates & support

The plugin checks for a newer version once a day (you can turn this off, or “Check now”, in the ⋮ menu). When one is available, an “Update available – v0.2.0” link appears in the header — click it to go straight to your downloads. To update, download the new build and copy the new Snare Enhancer.vst3 over the old one; your licence and settings are kept.
